Nurturing the Future of the Church

Children are the vibrant future of the Church. At St. George Orthodox Valiyapally follow Christ's command: "Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them" (Mathew 19:14).
Our Sunday School is a vital ministry dedicated to this mission, providing a strong spiritual foundation under the guidance of the Orthodox Sunday School Association of the East (OSSAE).
Rooted in Strong Faith and Knowledge
Our spiritual life is central to our learning. We ensure children participate in the Holy Qurbana before Sunday School classes. They are encouraged to wear light-coloured clothes, stand with discipline during the service, and participate by reading from the Old Testament.
Sunday School
We have Sunday school classes every Sunday from 10:30 AM to 11:30 AM,right after the second Holy Qurbana. We are blessed to nurture approximately 190 students, from our youngest learners in Balapadam (Kindergarten) to our senior students in Class 12 and the Veda Praveen Diploma program.
This important work is made possible by our team of 28 dedicated teachers, who provide loving spiritual guidance and education. Our teaching faculty consists of dedicated members who hold good positions and serve as excellent role models.
Our church is strengthened by many knowledgeable teachers and parents who have studied theology through the Divyabodhanam program of the Orthodox Theological Seminary. This rich resource deepens our entire community's understanding.
A Typical Sunday
Each session is carefully planned to be engaging, educational, and fun:
- Opening Prayer: We begin every class with a collective prayer to focus our hearts and minds on God.
- General Assembly:
* Singing hymns
* Interactive quizzes and biblical games
* Storytelling - Class: Students break into age-specific classes for lessons from the OSSAE curriculum.
- Group System: To build friendship and leadership, students are divided into four groups, each led by a student captain.
Supporting the Whole Child
We care for our children's spiritual, social, and physical well-being through various initiatives:
- Grand Welcoming Ceremony: Every new term begins with a special ceremony to bless the year ahead.
- Fellowship & Food: Following the Qurbana, children join the congregation for a common breakfast fellowship. Snacks are always provided if breakfast is not available.
- Celebrations: We celebrate our children! Each session ends by recognizing students who have birthdays that week.
- PTA: Our Parent-Teacher Association committee works closely with teachers to ensure the Sunday School runs smoothly, creating a strong bond between the church and our families.
- Orthodox Vacation Bible School (OVBS):Our annual OVBS is a highlight and an integral part of our ministry, attracting a large number of participants every year.
Encouraging Excellence and Participation
We are committed to nurturing excellence in all areas of life:
- Academic Growth: Student progress is tracked through half-yearly examinations to encourage diligent study. Then leading them to the final examination.
- Recognition: Prizes for academic achievement, attendance, and extracurricular activities are distributed on the annual parish day. Class 10 and 12 students also receive special honours at diocese-level functions.
- Church Ministry: Our Sunday School is a feeder for other church ministries. Many students sing in the St. George choir, with more preparing to join.
- Character Building: Our mission is to build the future church by encouraging children to build good character in all walks of life—at school, at home, and in their future careers and church life.
We are especially proud of our past students who have earned the prestigious "Sunday School Vijnani" title from OSSAE for their excellence.
We are incredibly proud of our alumni, who have excelled in various fields while remaining steadfast in their faith.
Our Sunday School is more than just a weekly class; it is a loving and supportive community, committed to raising a new generation in the faith and love of Christ.
