MGOCSM Palarivattom fosters Talent, Service, and Community
The Mar Gregorios Orthodox Christian Student Movement (MGOCSM) is the official student wing of the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church, with a profound and enduring legacy. Founded in 1908 by the visionary theologian and reformer, Saint Gregorios of Parumala, its core mission is to nurture the spiritual, intellectual, and social development of students within the Church.
The movement operates on the foundational principle of "Worship, Study, and Service," a triad that guides its activities. Through regular prayer meetings, Bible studies, and retreats, MGOCSM strengthens the faith of its members, anchoring them in the ancient traditions of the Orthodox Church. Simultaneously, it emphasizes the importance of academic excellence and intellectual growth, encouraging students to excel in their studies as a form of offering to God.
Beyond personal development, MGOCSM is renowned for its ethos of selfless service (Seva). Its members are actively involved in numerous philanthropic activities, including educational support for the underprivileged, blood and organ donation drives, and various charitable projects that benefit the wider community, irrespective of religious or social barriers. This outward focus instills a strong sense of social responsibility and compassion.
Structurally, MGOCSM functions through a widespread network of units in parishes, colleges, and schools across the globe, uniting the youth of the diaspora. It serves as a vital platform for fostering lasting friendships, leadership skills, and a deep sense of belonging to the global Orthodox community. More than just a student organization, MGOCSM is a formative movement that has shaped generations of leaders for the Church and society, ensuring the faithful continuation of its rich heritage.
MGOCSM Palarivattom Upholds Century-Old Mission of Faith, Study, and Service
At St. George Orthodox Valiyapally, Palarivattom, MGOCSM joins hands with OCYM in its activities. This vibrant joint group, operating under the spiritual guidance of our vicars, is dedicated to the holistic development of its members, fostering a strong spiritual foundation, intellectual curiosity, and a deep sense of social responsibility.
The unit’s activities are a rich tapestry of spiritual, educational, and social initiatives. Spiritually, the youth actively participate in and support major church events, from the consecration of the renovated church to organising chain prayers and producing heartfelt musical tributes. They engage in pilgrimages, Padayathras to holy sites, and participate in impactful prayer sessions and one-day camps like ‘Teshuvah’, which strengthen their faith and connection to the Church’s traditions.
The MGOCSM places a strong emphasis on intellectual growth and career guidance, a core mission of the student movement. It has successfully hosted orientation sessions on study abroad opportunities, providing valuable insights for students planning their academic futures. Furthermore, members have actively participated in forums such as the MGOCSM Legal Forum Conclave, engaging with contemporary issues from a faithful perspective. Motivational sessions led by experts are regularly organised to inspire and guide the youth in their personal and professional lives.
The social and creative dimensions of the unit are equally impressive. They have taken a firm stand on societal issues by organising anti-drug awareness programs in collaboration with the city police, involving both youth and Sunday School students. Their charitable spirit is evident in initiatives like distributing meals during Lent and making donations to various relief funds. The unit’s artistic talents shine through in events like the Eco Art Expo for children and their stellar performances in diocesan cultural festivals (Kalamela), where they have excelled in competitions ranging from light music and group songs to drawing and extempore speaking. Their athleticism is also showcased through active participation in regional football and badminton tournaments.
The MGOCSM and OCYM together at our Palarivattom Orthodox Church is a nurturing ground for future leaders of the church and society. Through its diverse and well-rounded calendar of activities, it successfully builds a compassionate community of young individuals who are spiritually grounded, intellectually equipped, and socially conscious, all while celebrating their faith in a spirit of joyous fellowship.
