Managing Committee
Stewards of Faith and Future

Where There Is No Vision, The People Perish
(Proverbs 29:18)
The administrative vitality of a parish is upheld by a dedicated body known as the Managing Committee. This council, operating under the guidance of the Vicar who works under the authority of the diocesan Metropolitan, serves as the foundational structure for the temporal well-being and orderly function of the church community.
Elected democratically by the POTHUYOGAM (General Body of parishioners), the Managing Committee is composed of faithful individuals who volunteer their time, skills, and resources. Their primary responsibility is the stewardship of the parish’s material assets. This encompasses the maintenance of church properties, prudent financial management, overseeing fundraising initiatives, and ensuring that the infrastructure supports the spiritual mission of the church.
However, their role extends beyond mere administration. The Managing Committee acts as a crucial bridge between the clergy and the laity, facilitating communication and fostering unity within the congregation. They collaborate closely with the Vicar to organise and support various church activities, including feasts, charitable outreach, and educational programs. By handling logistical and financial details, they enable the priest to focus on his pastoral and liturgical duties.
The Sacred Service of Parish Leadership
Ultimately, serving on the Managing Committee is considered a sacred sevanam (Service for the Lord). It is a ministry of stewardship, where members offer their talents for the glory of God and the growth of their parish. Their diligent, often behind-the-scenes work ensures that the parish remains a strong, self-sustaining community, preserving its heritage and securing its future for generations to come. They are the silent architects of a thriving parish, embodying the spirit of cooperation and devotion that is central to the faith.
Now we see more women are elected to the parish Managing Committee, which is a positive trend.
VICAR
The Vicar is the spiritual head and president of the Managing Committee. Presiding over meetings, the Vicar provides crucial guidance, ensuring all parish activities and decisions align with the Church's faith, doctrine, and canonical traditions. This role unites administrative governance with pastoral care, overseeing the parish's spiritual and temporal welfare.
TRUSTEE
A Trustee in the Malankara Orthodox Church is a legally elected lay leader responsible for managing the parish’s temporal affairs. He holds and oversees church property, finances, and assets, ensuring their prudent use and safeguarding for the benefit of the entire parish community, in accordance with its constitution.
SECRETARY
The Parish Secretary is a key administrative officer responsible for the church's records and correspondence. Duties include preparing agendas, documenting meeting minutes, maintaining official registers, and handling communications. The Secretary ensures smooth administrative functioning and preserves the historical record of parish decisions and activities.
