Martha Mariyam Samajam
A Cornerstone of Faith and Service

Marth Mariya Samajam is the paramount women's organisation within the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church. Far more than an auxiliary group, it is a vibrant and indispensable ministry that serves as a foundational pillar for spiritual fellowship, charitable outreach, and the social empowerment of women. Its enduring legacy, established over a century, continues to strengthen the fabric of the Church and society at large.
Historical Foundation and Patronage
The Samajam was founded in 1918, inaugurated with the official blessing and guidance of Saint Vattasseril Geevarghese Mar Dionysius, when he was Metropolitan of the Church. This timing places its establishment during a pivotal period of renewal and organisation within the Malankara Orthodox Church. The association is placed under the heavenly patronage and intercession of the Theotokos, the Virgin Mary, whom members venerate as their ultimate exemplar of faith, obedience, and humble service. This devotion is not merely symbolic; it actively shapes the Samajam's character, inspiring members to emulate Mary's virtues in their daily lives and ministries.

Organisational Structure: A Network of Grace
Marth Mariya Samajam operates through a highly efficient and well-defined hierarchical structure that ensures its mission permeates every level of the Church community:
- Parish Units:The bedrock of the organisation. Every parish is expected to have a unit of Samajam, forming the primary point of membership and local activity.
- Regional Chapters: Parish units within a geographical area are grouped into regional chapters for coordinated efforts and fellowship.
- Diocesan Chapters: All regions report to a diocesan-level chapter, which aligns activities with the vision of the diocesan Metropolitan and addresses larger, diocese-wide needs.
- Central Managing Committee: The apex body that provides overarching leadership, sets annual themes, organises major projects, and guides the global vision of the entire Samajam.
This robust structure ensures that initiatives from the central committee can be effectively implemented at the local level, and conversely, the experiences and needs of local units can inform broader Church policy.
Core Mission and Activities: A Dual Focus on Spiritual and Corporal Works
The Samajam's work is a harmonious blend of inner spiritual growth and outward practical charity, reflecting the Biblical call to love God and love one's neighbour.
Membership and Philosophy:
This robust structure ensures that initiatives from the central committee can be effectively implemented at the local level, and conversely, the experiences and needs of local units can inform broader Church policy.
Membership is open to all women of the parish, fostering an inclusive environment. The unit is guided by its potent motto: “Pray, Work, and Shine ” (പ്രാർത്ഥിക്കുക, പ്രവർത്തിക്കുക, പ്രകാശിക്കുക ). This encapsulates its holistic approach: grounding all action in prayer (Pray), engaging in diligent service (Work), and ultimately becoming a beacon of Christ's love in the world (Shine).
